Updated: Mar 13, 2020

About This Game When a global war nearly decimated humankind, an evil military organization called Oniken takes advantage of the situation to dominate and oppress the few remaining survivors. Even though any resistance to this organization seemed hopeless, a small rebel movement organizes strikes against Oniken. One day, a ninja mercenary named Zaku offers his services to the resistance for unknown reasons. His moves are lethal and now he is the resistance's only hope.Oniken is an action platform game highly inspired by the 1980's, its games and its movies. You can see this not only in the graphics and sound design, but also in Oniken's story and difficulty. Don't Worry, You Will Die A Lot Of Times. Every copy of Oniken comes with digital versions of the game manual and the original soundtrack.FeaturesGraphics, sounds and difficulty from the 8-bit eraCinematic cutscenesOver 18 boss fightsSix missions, three stages eachAn extra mission after you beat the gameBoss rush modeNot difficult enough? But I love it! It reminds me of old NES games, along with the difficulty they bestowed.I recommend this game.. The absolute best "retro" style game on Steam. I have a lot more than the apparent 3 hours put into it, but on Offline Mode. This game genuinely looks and sounds like an 8-bit game and plays like a NES game. On first play through of each level, it feels difficult but never frustrating. Once you've died a couple of times though, you should be able to play back to that point without dying once; it's incredibly fair. Due to being able to choose your level once you've reached it, the difficulty on normal mode isn't quite NES levels but it makes up for this by having 3 or 4 sections to each level that could be considered individual levels (often with a boss in each section). Controls, particularly with a gamepad (though keyboard is fine for this game), are great altogether. Some levels feel like Ninja Gaiden or Vice: Project Doom, while there are segments that feel more like Shinobi III (the jet ski sections specifically) but with 8-bit graphics. Really an incredible job done on it. Recommended at any price.. Try to imagine Fist of the North Star, Berserker, Strider, Contra and Ninja Gaiden having a NES/Famicom baby during the early '90s - the outcome would basically be Oniken. As sword-wielding Zaku it's up to you to slice up enemies through 6 pretty challenging stages and to save the world from an evil overlord and his menacing cyborg army. Especially the later sections in the game are quite tough but still manageable if you memorize the boss patterns and make use of some simple methods.Even though many players may not be impressed by the pseudo 8-Bit graphics, I still must stress out the smooth pixel artwork. The devs sure have a good taste of gory Anime shows and rock hard sidescrollers from the golden past. Music, sound effects and even controls all feel like a legit NES game and do their job perfectly. Sweet. The only letdown is that it's not really a long game at the end of the day. Sure, the later stages indeed consume a lot of time until you beat them, but theoretically it's possible to see the ending after half an hour if you're really good. Ultimately I can say that Oniken represents a solid Strider/Ninja Gaiden clone with some really nice moments and awesome boss fights. Preferably get it during sales when it's almost free. And beat the game in Hardcore Mode if you've got balls of steel.7/10. Excellent NESdie game, very authentic to the roots of 8-bit era with modern gameplay !8/10. If you're looking to polish those long-rusty retro gaming skills look no further. Oniken harkens back to the days when difficulty equalled longevity. If you want to see the end of this game get ready to work for it. Add in beautiful sprite work and tight controls and you have the perfect game to scratch that Classic Ninja Gaiden itch.. A very well designed action platformer based on Nes Ninja Gaiden with Kenshiro as the protaganist. I'll probably say more once I beat it, but those two should be strong enough selling points for now.. Its name is Oniken, a remake of Kage from nintendo famicom
