Honestly, the graphical errors and such are things that I expected when playing an old games. There were many times where strange overlaps would occur and break the game, so I had to reopen-- even after adjusting the resolution and other display settings as seen recommended in forums. If you play this, for the love of god, save often.I should clarify I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes in literature. Some of the games definitely deliver in this category. My favorite remains Crimes & Punishments, which is both intuitive in control and camera as well as plot development, but still challenging and intriguing. I've trudged through some of the older games, but this one is probably one of my least favorite.Pros: Still the pompous Sherlock you'll find in all games. However, this lacks the charm of his absolute lack of self-preservation that other games will happily highlight for you-- imo, one of his bigger charms. Banter between him and the cops is troll as always. Overlooking random visual glitches, the cutscenes aren't so bad for a 14 year old game.Cons: Navigation is a headache, a trait of old clickers, unfortunately. A map is provided for some locations, but there is no indication of your own position in it, and the whirling camera angles make it pretty hard to deduce on your own. There is a lot of being tugged around in many directions, without a lot of evidence that ever begins to lean somewhere. A lot of useless filler information. Some of the puzzles genuinely made me curse aloud. Not because of difficulty, but because of genuine absurdity. If the overwhelming portion of players for your game admit to relying on a walkthrough, the issue is with the design, not the player. Puzzles should provide some level of intuitive hint or structure. Simple actions are made complicated due to literally no explanation or reason. I spent three minutes trying to stick something in g*ddamn water because it is not expressed to you that you need to heat the water first. I would never guess I have to heat water up to put soap in it. WHY, lmao? Progression makes no sense and involves a lot of redundant pathing. You can literally be the only person navigating a location, but after finding one clue, all the sudden like 6 more objects that are very visually obvious appear, rather than having existing objects gain meaning. What? How does that make sense at all? Who is walking around dropping things while you sift through papers? Minor complaint that visuals will de-sync, and certain voice actors are 3x louder than others. All-in-all, there's definitely a better detective-style game out there.. Before buying this game, be aware of these two things:1. If you have an unusual monitor resolution, the game's hot spots may be improperly synced, making it impossible to interact with things. I was only able to fix this by switching to a different monitor. I've only heard of one other person having this problem, however.2. There is a missable clue in the first chapter which breaks the game near the end. The game requires you to pick up all necessary clues before moving on except this glitched one. Consult a guide and save yourself the hours it'll take to start over.All in all, Silver Earring has taken a huge step from Mystery of the Mummy. The story, gameplay, controls, and voice acting are all vastly improved. This game marks where the series really began to capture the traditional Sherlock Holmes vibe. Unlike many mystery games where the protagonist seems to be a complete idiot, Holmes is always a step ahead without leaving the player feeling completely lost. The end-of-chapter quizzes really help to keep you up with the story, so you don't find yourself simply clicking around with no idea what's going on.Though the game is an overall improvement from it's predecessor, it does have its share of problems. The occasional typos and strange subtitles were more funny than annoying to me. The Action/Stealth sections can be a bit difficult as Holmes is not always easy to control, but with a few tries they can be mastered. For the most part, if you are forgiving of the game's age it will be easier to enjoy.. If you get easily salty cos of bad game mechanics then you shouldn't play this game. In general I'd suggest everyone to play this game with a walkthrough of it, so everytime when you get stuck you can check the walkthrough and progress further in the game. I play a lot of detective games and I got stuck a lot of times in this game, cos sometimes you literally have to find a bunch of hair somewhere which you can super easily overlook.And if you reach the point in the game where you have to sneak past a guard and the guard dog: SAVE IMMEDIATELY! Because if you fail to sneak past them, the investigation is over and you have to re-load a save. Since this game does not have autosave, it has happened to me that I forgot to save for quite a while, got caught by the guards and lost progress of almost an hour.And if you reach the point where you're in a forest which is kind of like a maze: SAVE IMMEDIATELY AGAIN! Because the same thing will happen again if you fail this mission.Some of the puzzles did not make any sense to me, even with the help of the walkthrough. And the story can get super confusing at one point cos it's connected with so many side stories and I gotta admit that I lost track of what was happening halfway through the game. Still played it until the end cos I wanted to know who the murderer was. All in all the game wasn't bad. Some mechanics were weird, some puzzles didn't make sense and the story is confusing but it still was an experience and fun to play through it. I'd say buy it when it's on sale so you won't regret spending the whole amount on it (let's be honest, the price is too high).You can finish it within 8-10 hours.. The game is old and the navigation of the characters are a pain sometimes, but this excellent story is worth all the troubles. Bravo Frogwares,. overall a good point n click. this game doesn't even take place near the 22nd century. The leap between Mystery of the Mummy and The Silver Earring is pretty astounding. The Mystery of the Mummy was predominately a first-person (as in Myst/Riven) adventure with low resolution textures. Two years later with The Silver Earring, the game becomes a point and click adventure with respectably nice graphics.In this adventure, Holmes and Watson witness the murder of the host to a gun shot at a dinner party they were invited to but didn't see the shooter. In fact no one saw the shooter, and it is up to Holmes and Watsons to gather testimonials, clues, and documents to solve the mystery. Overall, it was a pleasant surprise. The game looks largely pre-rendered, which meant the environment looks nice for such an old game, the trade-off being that people, who aren't pre-rendered, may be disproportionate in size to their surroundings. For example, when Holmes stands next to a doorway, he might be much taller than it from one camera angle, but look perfectly fine in another. My biggest gripe is that the controls can be clumsy when trying to control characters to move somewhere, being unresponsive at times unless the character is repositioned.Despite the problem, it's still worth a playthrough. Every now and then, Holmes and Watson summarize their findings and you're quizzed with Yes or No questions. For each answer, you have to justify your choice by selecting the appropriate evidence/testimonial. While the game provides color-coded indicators for choosing testimonial, evidince, or documents, it's pretty cool that it requires you to actually keep up with reading the findings in order to progress through the game. The game provides a database to look back on previous conversations and findings so a pen and paper is not needed to keep records yourself.This game is recommended on the note that the diminishing point is the clumsy controls. On a last note, I played the game using DxWnd in order to put the game into windowed mode, which is not natively supported, otherwise the image will be stretched if you have a widescreen monitor.
